Sling or carrier - what's the difference?

Can anyone explain the difference between a sling and a carrier to me - are slings the more fabricky ones and the carriers more structured like Babybjorns?

the terms do get used interchangeably though, you also get slings that have certain elements of a more structured carrier so I don't think really looking at just the name will always tell you what they are.
