My son purchased a car via gumtree from a company that sells numerous cars on there. It was an old car but since he has had it the engine light has come on. He took. It to a garage and been told it needs over 1200 £ of work done on it. This problem was obviously there before purchase. I have contacted the seller numerous times but they ignore me and gumtree dont get involved. Does anyone know if I have an options with this ? I do know he shouldn’t have got it from there but this seller does sell a lot of cars on there .

Would anyone consider taking the seller to small claims?
Car is totally rubbish and undriveable. Despite numerous emails asking for a solution seller continues to ignore me. My son has lost his car and all his money.

Would I have any chance of winning. I have original ad saying car starts and drives like new

Whether you have a chance of winning depends on exactly what is wrong with the car but it sounds worth a shot at small claims and at the very least should get their attention and make them respond to your son.

Prove it. The engine light wasn't on when he bought it. All problems have to start at some point.

Yes problems have to start. But this started within days of being driven and its not something that just goes !

And they say they offer a months guarantee which they haven't kept to because they at first denied it was them and now refuse to answer me.

I also feel that if they had nothing to hid why not just reply to me and see if a solution can be sorted. Ive never been rude or threatening with them. Just trying to sort something.

The engine light wasn't on when he bought it. It came on after he bought it. You have no idea if the problem was pre existing and they knew about it. You just want to believe that's true.
