How do you stop pop-ups?

I know this has been done before but I couldn't find the answer in 'search'.

My friend and I have both been caught out by accidentally activating a pop-up box on the computer and ending up with huge phone bills. we have both already put on premium rate call-barring which should stop this happening again, but how do you stop the pop-ups in the first place? Thank you in advance.

Twiglett, I have the google toolbar (79 blocked so far) but it doesn't block all pop-ups. Have I done something wrong?

Mine is on my BT program and works so far

except....they have started doing BT pop ups that pass through which i am really peeved about
