Automatic family hatchback for 8k

Hi everyone

I'm in need of car expertise which I seriously lack.

Was gonna buy a car in a few months but need it more urgently now which also means smaller budget. I have two kids and hubby doesn't drive.

I have up to 8k to spend, the car needs to be automatic, petrol engine and economic. Would mostly be driving around town with an occasional trip down the motorway. Ideally max 5 years old.

Have considered:
Seat Leon
VW golf
Vauxhall Astra
Ford focus
Mazda 3
Any others I should consider?

Leon and golf would be more economic as others tend to come with a bigger engine. Ford focus 1.0 ecoboost appears surprisingly poor In terms of fuel economy, not sure why. Worried about boot space but seen a golf estate within my price range but with a lot of mileage.

What's better, newer car with lots of mileage or older one with less on the clock?

Any advice much appreciated.

Actually scratch that, I only get 25 miles to the gallon on a long run.

21 the rest of the time.
