Small car good for long distances

I am looking for a 2-3 year old hatchback car with 5 doors that is also good on long journeys.
It will be driving through Europe once a year and across the UK about 3 times a year.

I have shortlisted it to 3 -

The Mini 5 door hatch Cooper S

Volkswagen Golf GTD

The golf is the sensible option size wise but are considerably more money than the Mini.

The Golf is hardly a small small car so in that size you're also looking at the Ford Focus, Audi A3, BMW 1 series, Volvo V40, Mazda Mazda3

For motorway driving I'd be considering the Hyundai i30 or going up a size to the Skoda Superb

VW polo. Slight smaller than golf and imo awesome value!
