I really need to buy some new makeup.
At the mo i am using collection 2000 foundation, and seperate powder, but it often looks like i haven't put anything on at all as you can still see skin blemishes, old spot marks e.t.c.
It also makes me look pale so is obviously the wrong colour too.

Any make-up experts out there who can help me please

Could also do with a good mascara blusher and lippy too

Do you use concealer nc?

nutcracker · 31/08/2004 20:51

Yep but that is pretty crappy too

Doesn't seem to cover anything up really.

My recommendation re foundation is Estee Lauder Double Wear Make up - it's liquid foundation and I find I don't have to put any powder on top. It certainly evens out the colour in my face so you can't see any old marks or changes in colour. It's £20 a bottle but mine lasts a good few months as you don't need loads. My advice would be to go to the counter and get them to help you find the right colour - that's what I did about 5 years ago and I've stuck to the same ever since!!

Mascara - I like the Lancome ones but they are about £16 each and now we are on a bit of an economy drive I've gone to Maybelline ones which I find good too.

Lippy wise - I'm with you. I'm not sure which are particularly good so would be interested to hear anyone's recommendations!

Hope this helps!

ooh .. mascara has to be the pink and black one. Um... wait, be right back, it's "Great Lash Waterproof". You'll also have to buy proper eye makeup removal gunk, but it doesn't smudge.

For concealer, I used to use the Bobbi Brown stuff, but have switched to Burt's Bees as it's cheaper and the colour is correct.

No idea about lipsticks or blushers or proper foundation, sorry!

I use mostly No7 as its hypoallergenic. M & S stuff makes my face swell up for some reason so I just stick with what I know

Chandra · 31/08/2004 21:02

I use Double Wear Make up, it hides everything and last all day long, it last for ages. I use it with Maybelline Pure Powder Matt finish. But my favourit is Estee Lauder Equalizer doesn't last as long but has the nice peculiarity of moisturising your skin if it's dry (so no flakes!) and reducing the shine if it's oily which is great if you have combination skin.

cazzybabs · 31/08/2004 21:02

I use No. 7 - seems to hide most things. I use their ultimate foundation.

If you are on a budget, then Avon do some good stuff, and they tend to do a lot of offers as well. If you want more expensive make up, but for a cheaper price, then I would try strawberrynet.com. Always discounted, sometimes up to 60%, and free p&p. I got a Mac lippy from them for £4.55.

I find Rimmel hide the blemish, used with a brush, is good for shadows etc.

nutcracker · 31/08/2004 21:12

Oooh lots of stuff to think about there.

I agree that i do need a better foundation and it is worth spending a bit mor on i think.
The double wear one sounds like what i need. Think i'll go and ask in department store which colour to get though.

Will i have to go in with no make up on ???

I use a lot of the Virgin Vie makeup as it seems pretty good and isn't too expensive.

Hulababy · 31/08/2004 21:28

First time I went to Virgin Vie I got:

  • One step face base
  • a creme eye shadow
  • a powder eye shadow
  • khol pencil
  • lipstick
  • lip liner
  • blusher
  • mascara

And I spent between £60 and £70. Lasted me a good while too.

Hulababy · 31/08/2004 21:29

I can recommend the strawberrynet.com website for service and costs. Not used it for make up but did buy BIL/SIL in Australia perfume and aftershave through it. Great service.

Nutty, are you sure you need to wear foundation and powder at the same time? I remember reading you're very young...

Anyway, with prices in mind and quality, here it goes:

I'm not an expert but I would say make the most expensive purchase a good concealer for under eyes and blemishes. I'm afraid with this product you get what you pay most of the time. I use YSL Touch Eclat for under my eyes and the odd reddish mark on the face. It does not cover it as such but the skin looks better. There are some green coloured sticks/fluids for covering up spots, Clarins do one and am quite sure most of the others do too, probably even No7. IMO it is best to treat blemishes than cover them up (cannot recommend TeeTree Oil highly enough for spots, or Neutrogena do a spot gel). That's why a very good cleanser suitable for your skin type is essential. You would notice a dramatic improvement in your skin condition. And drinking lots of water (cheaper than buying expensive make-up!). Then you need a reasonable day moisturiser and a very good night moisturiser. I think Olay do pretty good stuff and would also consider NO7 skin care for this. Nivea might be a good one too, not sure about L'oreal as I never heard anyone talk about it. If you have a good skin care routine, you'll find your skin would improve within a month. remember to exfoliate once a week with a very gentle product (look in Boots own plant based products or body shop, don't need to spend a fortune here).

Foundation: don't know much about this but I've heard Lauder's one mentioned earlier is good, Clinique and Prescriptives do one tailor made for you (not cheap though), from looking at magazines, there's an advert for a foundation compared to the feeling of cashmere, can't remember the make but someone here would know, either maybeline or Max factor?? (if I was to try a foundation I would go for that, but that's purely because of advertising).

Powder: no idea, but apparently Lancôme do a very good one (not cheap again)

Mascara: As said before, the best rated affordable is the pink and green one by maybeline

Lipstick: to be honest I don't think it really matters what you buy here, they don't last that long anyway so buy whatever takes your fancy. My personal favourites are by Clinique but have a few which I use regularly from all sorts of places and one of a good quality is from No7 as it happens.

Blusher: no idea. make sure you get someone along to help you choose the colour though as it's a tricky one. I use a powder, but there are lots of solid ones around (like a giant lipstick) which are supposed to be easy to apply.

V. good idea from someone else earlier, do go and have a make-up session at a department store (I think Body shop do them too) but leave your purse at home. Most of them work on commission so they'll tempt you with all sorts of things.

Phew! what a long post again.... To conclude: Touche Eclat the best investment (about£20). And look after your skin first, then see if you really need all the make-up! When do you have time to put it all on? With all the little ones??? Are you some kind of Wonder Woman?!

Happy shopping!

tamum · 31/08/2004 21:36

Just be aware that strawberrynet is based in Hong Kong, and you can be liable for duty. It depends on the value of what you've bought but I got some moisturiser and was stung for an extra £7.50 so it ended up more expensive than if I'd bought it here . I would have a look at somewhere like Buy Cosmetics , maybe?

Nutty - best think you can do for your complexion is to drink loads of good old water. I never drink enough, but I know I should!

Branster · 31/08/2004 21:38

or if you know theexact product you're after, you might find it at DirectCosmetics

lou33 · 31/08/2004 21:40

Never been done for duty on Strawberrynet. Maybe lots of small orders would be the way to go?

Touche Eclat cost loads and makes the skin under my eyes go red and crusty. Nice effect for zombies.
