Kids tablet, download to hard drive so no need for sim (you don't want a kid on the internet unless supervised). Cheap is good with kids and get a really tough case! Breaking it is almost inevitable. For an older teen an iPad may be better but not children, just ensure it runs a recent android software.

I would go for a kindle for children. We have one for my son and we pay (I'm sure it's £3.99) to get amazon kids unlimited which means they can download programmes, books and games and it's all age appropriate

Sorry if I should really bloody stupid now..so on the amazon tablet, when we are at home I can download programmes , films etc and then when we are out he can watch them?

You would swear I'm an 90 year old oap, the amount I know about this stuff!!

Yes, if you get a kindle fire and buy an SD card for extra memory the when you're home on WiFi you can download kids bbc iplayer or Netflix etc if you have a subscription.

Download the shows on WiFi then when you're out and about you can play what's downloaded.

If you specifically buy the kindle fire for kids then they will replace if it gets broken. If not then buy when there's a sale in, I got my kindle fire 7 for £29.99 so it's not a big deal if it's dropped.

You can download YouTube videos too so that you don't need Internet to watch them. Video uses loads of mobile data so is a pricy way to watch on the go.

As a side - you can download the kindle app on any table for books
