something to do with your bodies conductivity.

mine is strange, don;t know even if i lose the weight i'll every fit into the chart.

brimfull · 20/06/2007 13:11

so does it send an electric pulse up to your fat?

I have the tanita one. It measures resistance, can tell the difference in density between fat and muscle and water. Hence the ability to work out your body fat percentage.

daisyboo · 20/06/2007 13:14

they don't....anything that tells me I'm over 50% body fat and clinically obese has no place in my bathroom

brimfull · 20/06/2007 13:14

really-all from the soles of your feet?

OP posts:
SpacePuppy · 20/06/2007 14:04

SpacePuppy · 20/06/2007 14:04

making a closed circuit...

Bioelectrical Impedance
"Until fairly recently, measuring body fat percentage required the help of professionals. Bioelectrical Impedance technology means that body fat monitors are now easy to operate and available for home use.

A very low level electrical signal is sent through the body - normally by standing on sensors on a body fat monitor. The signal travels quickly through lean tissue, which has a high percentage of water and is therefore a good conductor of electricity, and more slowly through fat, as fat has a lower percentage of water and is therefore a poor conductor of electricity. Bioelectrical Impedance devices use the information from this signal to work out body fat percentage."

Ever heard the term TOFI? They recon this is the reason why a lot of women has heart attacks...stands for thin on the outside fat on the inside, the fat actually accumulates around the organs. Go on google it...

TY Spacepuppy,

No wonder i'm hanging around waiting for the reading then, the only lean thing i have is my purse.

herbiemom · 20/06/2007 14:42

Ruined my holiday at CenterParcs 2 weeks ago by going on one of these things. Told me I had 43% body fat! WTF! I'm a little overweight but blimey - didn't think for a minute that I was nearly half comprised of fat.

DP has since been lovingly calling me 'semi-skimmed' or 'lambchop'. Charming.

SpacePuppy · 20/06/2007 19:38

yep, I'm currently obese ( you wouldn't say if you can see how I look) although I think my fat sits on the outside of my stomach muscles hence the confusion. I'm classic TOFI only 3kg overweight though.
