Am I the only person who doesn't find a "here comes trouble" bib funny?

Rough count at mum and toddler group (only 8 babies).

1 "here comes trouble" bib
1 "I'm only naughty when I'm awake" dress
1 "Little monster T shirt" worn with "trouble" trousers.

Initially I kept quiet, I'm not that keen on putting negative statements on preschoolers but they could have been presents and goodness knows we are all saving money. Also it's not my business. I bought some underpant packs that have 1 pair that say "street fighter" - (size 2-4 I mean honestly), but they can't be seen and they were the equivalent of 10p each.

But then they all compared their children's clothes and I discovered the mums find the things hilarious and it turns out they had all purchased them themselves(albeit on sale).

I asked if they would like it if someone put a negative stereotype on them; say "Thunderthighs" maybe, for a woman trying to lose her baby weight, or "4 eyes" for a woman who wears glasses etc. Apparently it's not the same.

How on earth can you expect a child to act like an angel when wearing a little monster T shirt.

maddiemo - love the "Auntie" one - where would you get one of those?

stupidgirl · 29/08/2004 23:16

I loved those 'under construction' ones from Blooming Marvellous...

I find certain of those t-shirts mildly amusing, but I wouldn't put my kids in them, personally.

I have to admit though, when ds was tiny, my dad bought him a vest which said "If you think I'm cute you should see my Mum." I was incredibly touched as my dad isn't the sort of person who usually buys gifts (mum does all the xmas/birthday shopping etc) and the fact that it was completely unnecessary, and it was a very touching expression of affection and acceptance of a pregnancy which hadn't been particularly welcomed.

stupidgirl · 29/08/2004 23:19

Sorry for that really long sentence :)

The other thing that bugs me (in addition to the camouflage thing) is cartoon characters on boys clothes. I've been trying to get ds some pj's which don't feature football or violent or aggressive kind of cartoon characters.

stupidgirl · 29/08/2004 23:20

What happened to my smiley???

maddiemo · 29/08/2004 23:31

Tommy She had it done at a craft shop

posyhairdresser · 31/08/2004 10:47

Saw one on an adult today:
"Just escaped from the asylum for a day"
maybe these could come free with the "here comes trouble" bibs?!

blossomhill · 31/08/2004 10:49

I think they are naff but must say that my SIL's got a "princess on board" and I think it is sweet!

Grommit · 31/08/2004 11:13

Just bought my single (looking for a man) friend a t-shirt "Buy me another drink - you are still ugly" - well I thought it was funny anyway
The things i hate most are the maternity t-shirts with very unwitty slogans such as "under construction"...

discordia · 31/08/2004 12:15

Don't mind what kids' T-shirts have on them. It's the adult ones that bug me. Especially ... ones with obscene language all over them ... "You are a naughty boy, go to my room" ones on women old enough to know better ... and all those FCUK T shirts - they might have been witty at first but isn't it time for a change?

clary · 31/08/2004 14:32

stupidgirl you are so right about pjs...where oh where can I find some for my DS1 (5) which don't have Spiderman or Harry Potter on? I refuse to pay Boden or white company prices. Don't mind a car or a tractor or a lion or whatever, but nice cheerful stuff please! Shall i start a thread askignfor suggestions?

wellsie · 31/08/2004 14:42

I like the t-shirts with slogans and I'm not ashamed to admit it!!
Today DS is wearing "little devil" And yes I was one of those mums who wore a "Mind the Bump" t-shirt.

PotPourri · 31/08/2004 15:00

Interesting post. I think they are quite cute - but see your point about labelling them. Hate christmas things - naff. And I really really hate the pregnancy ones - started with a kiss especially!! Mind you, I do find little tops that change famous brands slightly. SIL has one that says Blonde & Deadly (Black & Decker logo) which is quite cool, and another one that has the london underground sign and Angel above it.

Like I say, interesting post as I am kind of on the fence. I guess it's down to personal taste

Angeliz · 31/08/2004 15:18

The t-shirts if ind REALLY irritating though are the ones that teenage girls wear saying
'what are you straing at?'

What the f* it really gets my goat, especially when i am straing trying to read it!!!

woodpops · 31/08/2004 15:37

T-shirts with slogans on really don't bother me. DH brought ds a 'trouble is my middle name' t-shirt yesterday. The only reason I wasn't keen on it was because it was from Next and every other kid wears them. I didn't realise some people had such strong views on these slogans. I had a deffinately baby t-shirt when I was pregnant and thought it was fab. Even wore it to an Oasis gig. Now how gimmicky is that?????

Welshmum · 31/08/2004 15:53

Best place for inoffensive sleepwear I've found is the Gap sale.
I don't like slogans either - unless they are positive or funny and rarely seen. I can't stand that FCUK merchandise - it was mildly amusing 5 years ago for about 5 minutes, but now it's so unoriginal.

whitefeather · 31/08/2004 16:10

come on these tshirts are fun, no offence is supposed to be taked my niece has princess on her t shirt doesnt mean she is one or that we are going to make her believe shes one! my godson also has heartbreaker t shirt, and looks so so cute in it, what is tack is whn you see kids in designer gear ( burberry ect) dripping with gold

Hulababy · 31/08/2004 16:17

I have no problems with most slogan tops, etc so long as cute/funny and appropraite to age - hate ones that are offensive, even if mildly. Don't mind the odd designer item either - some of it is very nice and indivdual. Each to their own I say.

I really don't think it particularly labels a child though as all. Never thought about it before and I doubt most people would think a child wearing a "troble" t-short truely believed the parent felt that way about their child all the time.

wild · 31/08/2004 16:32

what is worse is 'beware, tiny person on board' in back of your car. YUCK!! TINY PERSON!

wild · 31/08/2004 16:32

what is worse is 'beware, tiny person on board' in back of your car. YUCK!! TINY PERSON!

whitefeather · 31/08/2004 16:34

yeah but whats worse is ..... mums taxi, kids taxi, bumper stickers are so naff!

peachypie · 31/08/2004 16:43

good thread - my ds has a 100% mischief on right now, which i thinks cute but i certainly dont like the more agressive ones.

suedonim · 31/08/2004 17:29

In general I don't mind slogan T-shirts, though they're not something I'd buy but one I saw today on a small girls t-shirt - 'Who asked your opinion?' It seems so aggressive and rude.

wordgirl · 31/08/2004 17:42

Has anyone seen those trendy David and Goliath t-shirts that say things like 'Boys are stupid - throw rocks at them'. At first I thought this was amusing but then as a mum of three boys I'm not so sure (or I could be just having a complete sense of humour failure). It occurred to me that if it was 'Girls are stupid - throw rocks at them' would anyone think it was funny?
But even worse than this, I saw a young girl (about 9 or 10?) on Saturday wearing a t-shirt which proclaimed: 'If you think I'm a bitch you shoud see my mum'

lou33 · 31/08/2004 17:50

I like the kid's t shirts that say "my mum is a fox".

alexsmum · 31/08/2004 17:58

i saw a boy of about 10 at the weekend whose t-shirt proclaimed " bored, lazy, hungry".How charming!!! Stand by the christmas stuff, its lovely. My problem is with the negative t-shirt messages. My kids aren't monsters, they're lovely children. The heartbreaker one, that's not a negative as ' heartbreaker' is just a word for a good looking person...which is why my kids have them!!
