Am I the only person who doesn't find a "here comes trouble" bib funny?

Rough count at mum and toddler group (only 8 babies).

1 "here comes trouble" bib
1 "I'm only naughty when I'm awake" dress
1 "Little monster T shirt" worn with "trouble" trousers.

Initially I kept quiet, I'm not that keen on putting negative statements on preschoolers but they could have been presents and goodness knows we are all saving money. Also it's not my business. I bought some underpant packs that have 1 pair that say "street fighter" - (size 2-4 I mean honestly), but they can't be seen and they were the equivalent of 10p each.

But then they all compared their children's clothes and I discovered the mums find the things hilarious and it turns out they had all purchased them themselves(albeit on sale).

I asked if they would like it if someone put a negative stereotype on them; say "Thunderthighs" maybe, for a woman trying to lose her baby weight, or "4 eyes" for a woman who wears glasses etc. Apparently it's not the same.

How on earth can you expect a child to act like an angel when wearing a little monster T shirt.

i dont mind them BUT i have avoided buying one cause of what youre saying!! i didnt want to label my ds at nursery !(though he can be a little monster at times

moomina · 29/08/2004 07:17

Sorry, toddlerbob, but I don't think it is the same! I'm not crazy about them myself but I honestly don't think they're reinforcing negative stereotypes. I wouldn't buy my ds a t-shirt that said 'I'm my Mummy's little angel' either, although he mostly is.

I don't expect my child to act like a little angel, whatever t-shirt he's wearing! I expect him to act like a toddler - mostly gorgeous and cute and funny and smart and beautifully behaved, and sometimes a red-faced, yelling, pain in the bum...

Having said that, I wouldn't buy them because a) I'm not keen on slogans of any sort on t-shirts and b) everyone wears them Tbh I find the idea of underpants with 'street fighter' on them far more offensive!

I hate all of htem tbh

Gingerbear · 29/08/2004 08:23

They are the height of naffness IMHO.

Can't stand 'Christmas' clothes either. You know the ones Santa on bibs, sleepsuits, etc. Especially little red fur trimmed numbers that make babies look like extras from 'White Christmas'

enid · 29/08/2004 08:30

hate them

don't like them, hate those trendy slogan t-shirts too.

codswallop · 29/08/2004 08:55

Like the classy " Lovely pears"
or " I am a bitch?"

Clayhead · 29/08/2004 08:56

When they've been bought for ds I've taken them back and changed them. No one has bought anything like that for dd though.

Clayhead · 29/08/2004 08:57

Posts crossed.

Obviously not 'I am a bitch' tops for ds !!

hercules · 29/08/2004 11:37

Hate them also. NEver understood the point either. Why?
Hate, hate, hate xmas outfits as well. So naff!

DelGirl · 29/08/2004 12:50

I have a real dislike for childrens clothes with slogans on and I hope I don't get bought any when this one arrives. That makes me sound ungrateful but.... I also hate the all in ones (snowsuits?) that make your baby look like a bear or something with ears. They're babies ffs not animals!

JJ · 29/08/2004 12:55

krocket, those are great! What a great idea. Thanks for the link.

GeorginaA · 29/08/2004 12:57

While I can sort of see your point, I have to confess that I rather liked ds1's t-shirt which had the picture of a computer mouse and the slogan "Geek In Training"

I quite often refer to ds1 as "Mummy's Little Monster" in a jokey voice, he laughs too and it's usually during huge hug time. I don't think he's horrendously behaved or setting him up for life with a bad label. I praise him to high heaven when he's well-behaved (which is a fair proportion of the time). I honestly don't believe these t-shirts are going to scar them for life...

Oh, and the best Christmas photos ever were when he was dressed up in a reindeer outfit...

... and he's got a Mumsnet T-shirt too...

Hmm, I should run from this thread while I still can, shouldn't I?

SoupDragon · 29/08/2004 13:01

DS2 had 2 last winter. One with 100% Mischief on it which I bought because he is. The other had Here Comes Trouble. Because he is!

SoupDragon · 29/08/2004 13:02

And if you've ever spent an time with him, you'll know I'm telling the truth.

edam · 29/08/2004 13:13

I did buy ds a teddy bear snowsuit, which he hardly ever worse as he protested every time... but his nursery had a dressing up day so I sent him along wearing this outfit. Have to say the photos are so, so cute! Nursery theme was different cultures so dh bought him a headress and claimed he was a native American called Little Bear. Not sure that's entirely PC... But then the only 'native American' I've never known described himself as a Sioux warrier and preferred red indian to native American...
