How about a Sebo Felix? I think it did quite quite well in Which? tests and it's very portable.

vax quicklite foldaway- i hate cylinder cleaners because they never quite do the job! I bought this from graded electricals direct on ebay and it nearly sucks the carpet off the floor! Beats my old dyson hands down!
