ergo- classic or new generation?

Not sure which to choose. the classic is £20 cheaper but is the new generation worth the extra. DH is concerned that I am buying another baby item that will prove to be a waste of money!

No, the Ergo will NEVER be a waste of money. They are FAB FAB FAB!

I think mine is a new generation one and it is the best baby product we have/ had.

I also have the new generations ergo, and it's great. not a waste of money. The second hand resale value is quite good as well.

if you think you'll use it on the front a lot it prolly makes sense to get the new gen. you can cross the straps over your back which, although i find it a bit awkward, makes it comfier. technically you can use it on the hip, but i don't know anyone who actually does use the hip carry so that might be a red herring. (i find just about any other style of sling easier/better for a hip carry)

the sleep hood on the new gen is definitely better - longer and shaped - the classic hood isn't great. the padded area on the straps is longer on the new gen iirc, and i find it tricky to get it the straps as tight as i like, but my friend who's much smaller than me has no problems so that's just personal preference.

i never felt the need to upgrade from my classic and have used it happily for nearly 3 years, but i used it almost exclusively as a back carrier, hardly at all on the front or for a younger baby.

I have the new generation organic, which is denim, and I love it. Another difference between classic and new gen is that the fabric for the non-denim ones is a bit thinner/less coarse than the classic.

I do use it in the hip carry btw.

thanks for that. Will show your comments to DH and get the joint credit card out!

a friend of mine has an ergo for sale, second hand. it is in great condition i am sure. i have asked her if it is a new gen or a classic ( i think it is a new gen) she is asking £48 plus postage.

i have a classic one. i think the diff between the two are:

a. the sleep hood on the new gen has poppers to attach while the classic has velcro
b. the new gen is lightly padded on the rectangular bit over the baby - makes it warmer for the baby in the summer.
c. there is a small zipper pouch on the bottom of the new gen. I think that the pouch which both carriers have on the rectangular bit i mentioned above also has a zipper but on the classic it is elasticated.

don't know if there are any more differences. The main structural set up between the two are identical, from what i have read on the ergo descriptions i have seen on websites.

i shall shamelessly link her page on 'the babywearer' to my post as i have known her for nearly 25 yrs and would trust her with my life.

Thanks. DH has informed me I have to choose between an extra car seat or a new carrier. Maybe if I say it is cheaper I could get both

Pixiefish · 16/06/2007 08:03

I have the classic but only because the new gen wasn't out when I bought mine.

I love my ergo- tis fab fab fab.

kiskidee · 16/06/2007 08:10

i have just linked some photos to my profile so that you can show your DH how dadtastic the ergo is.

CristinaTheAstonishing · 16/06/2007 08:35

I had the New Generation. I never quite got used to strapping DD on my back without help and I won't get another one for the new baby but a very good purchase overall.
