Are car seat blankets safe/worth it?

I'm due my first baby at the end of October and I have just been informed that you can't put a baby in a snowsuit/thick winter coat into a car seat due to it preventing the straps from being tight enough.

My question is, has any one used a car seat blanket? The one that the car seat straps go through.
Is it safe? Are they worth it or did you enough up not using it?

Any info/opinions are really appreciated.

My children are much older now but I don't think you'd need one. Just strap baby in safe and pop a blanket over the top if necessary.

I used grobags with mine and they had the part to put the straps through, they were great. I actually wish they made them in larger sizes as they looked so comfy in them.

it was worth it because I used the grobags for them to sleep at night so I wasn't just using for the car seats.
