Bike racks!

which is the best to buy, the roof top or the boot attachment one...have just checked a few websites and it looks like they start at around £40?....has anyone had one they could recommend as first timer with small Micra (for 4 bikes btw)thanksx

We've got the Thule roof System which is fab, but have previously had rear boot carriers too. Advantages are that you can carry your bikes without the fear of miniscule vibrations knackering your paintwork and driving you crazy for the whole journey and you don't have to worry about number plate and light packs to mount on the bikes too.....Also it is by far the safest and most secure way to carry the bikes and you can still get access to stuff in your boot. Disadvantages I suppose are actually raising the bikes to get them on the roof, although being nearly 6 foot this has never been a problem for me, and I manage to leave it to DH anyway!!Cost is perhaps higher with the roof mounts, but imo worth it. If you change the car I believe all you need is to change the foot pack that the bars go on, although I would visit the website to get further information on this if I was you. We currently either carry a slimline roofbox and 2 bikes or 4 bikes depending on what we need to take with us..... With a micra I would check the weight limit that the roof can hold before you get thinking too much although I seem to think you'll be OK. Happy shopping!!!

Just had a chat with DH - he of wonderous knowledge - who said that the roof of a micra won't hold 4 bikes as it's not wide enough and you'll have probably to choose a boot rack that holds 4 bikes - you can get them, or put 2 on the roof and 2 on the back, or change your car! Recommend pipe lagging (grey, cheap foam stuff that also doubles up as safety door protectors in our house!!)) to put round the frame to avoid rubbing and vibration!! Let us know how you get on...

thanks poppyseed, dh has a renault laguna, but he's not always around so has to be on my car really.
