two questions - slings and 'cat protectors'!

Hi all,

Some advice would be hugely appreciated...I'm due at the end of July and haven't really bought much stuff yet! Been given lots of clothes and a moses basket, know what pram I'm buying etc etc, but confused about two things:

  1. Would like to buy a sling that both DH and I can use to carry bebe round in. Any recommendations? (I'm 5 ft 6, he's 6ft 1). I think ideally one of those that doesn't involved too much tying round of swathes of material, if you know what I mean. Something we can just adjust to suit our different heights, pop on and go would be perfect...
  1. I've got two rather demanding cats! One is particularly large and fluffy so need to sort out some of those net moses basket/cot covers to protect the baby from any feline mishaps! I know these things exist but can't seem to find them anywhere! Any idea where I can get my hands on them?

Thanks so much in advance xxx

Hi, can't advise on the sling side of things because I didn't bother with one, but, honestly, don't bother with a cat net - I have THREE demanding cats, and got a cat net for both moses basket and the cot and used the moses basket one once and the cot one not at all. Your cats are more likely to run a mile in the OPPOSITE direction from your baby when he/she is born rather than attempt to snuggle up with them in the moses basket. Honestly, they are a waste of time and nothing but a PITA to put on/take off the moses basket or cot. One of my cats has only now (when dd is 2.4) started to sleep in her cot, and only when she is most definately NOT IN IT HTH

Hi there!

  1. Sling - we have a bjorn one which my DH finds more comfortable than me (he's 6'1, I'm 5'4) but that might be more because I have a bad back. I was given a swathes of material one this time round (number 3) which I actually find more comfortable.
  1. Cat nets - I bought one because lots of people kept telling me (old wives mostly!) that the cat would climb onto the baby because of the smell of milk and would suffcate him
I've never used the cat net and mostly the cat stays away anyway!

HTH

Oh, but if you are determined to get a cat net thingy, you can get them on the Perfectly Happy People website, sorry can't do links!!

I had 2 cats when ds1 was born - they liked to get in the carry-cot and cot when the baby wasn't in it.
I solved this by turning the carry-cot upside down when not in use and kept the bedroom door shut, so that they couldn't get in the cot.

I would think you and your dh would both use a Mei tai- they are usable from newborn to 3+ years.. my DH loves his!!

A pouch is nice for a newborn but unless you and DH are similar in size you wouldn't share one easily.

I can highly recomend a stretchy wrap too- and they often come with videos so the swaths soon make sense

Stock most types of sling and she is VERY helpful as a consultant via email. hth

Easiest 'pop and go' slings to use are (unfortunately) the non-adjustable pouch ones - there are a few pouch ones with adjustable shoulder bits about but you might have to search a bit - try Kangaroo Corner or Baba Slings or have a Google.
The alternative is a ring sling - loads of those around.
Big Mama Slings do a hire service if you want to try before you buy and The Babywearer is a fab resource for information on all things slingy.

No help on cat nets I'm afraid!
