If its just books you should have to pay anything. CDs and DVDs sometimes get stung for VAT - customs open random boxes, so sometimes you get away with it.

Books are zero rated for VAT in the UK so you won't be charegd Import VAT on them.
In general you won't be charged Import VAT if the value of the goods is below £18.
