Bugaboos and London buses

Usual first time parents pram dilemma...Have to say that am drawn to the Bugaboo along with half the population of SW London. The woman in John Lewis said she'd never seen one on the bus but I find that hard to believe? Anyone happily go on the bus with one?(unfolded obviously and not at rush hour. Thanks

i'm selling one.

MrsBadger · 14/05/2007 12:28

have seen several London MNers who say they do - have a search .

So long as you don't have to fold it I guess you'd be ok but it could be a pain if you ever did.

ScottishMummy · 14/05/2007 14:54

i travel daily on London buses

bugaboo is a dream pram
easy to maneouvre
fit alongside other prams
flip up your handlabar for more room

its a great pram

ScottishMummy · 14/05/2007 14:55

ooo i also do rush hour never had to fold the buggy either

ScottishThistle · 14/05/2007 14:57

ScottishMummy...Where in London are you travelling, surely not centralish?...I'd never have been able to get on a buggy during rush hour in any of the areas I've worked.

bakedpotato · 14/05/2007 15:00

bugaboos deeply antisocial on the buses imo
they tend to hog the buggy bay
whereas you can get 3 maclarens in with careful handling
I've been left behind in the rain at busstops thanks to bugaboo owners

jem1969 · 14/05/2007 15:35

Thanks for replies
Baked Potato-aren't all the prams for under 6 months much bigger than McLarens's anyway. In the shop the Bugaboo seemed on the narrow side compared to some others.I can see the benefit of a nippy little mcLaren when they're bigger but what about when they need to lie flat? (Not being contentious- just genuinely interested! Have a slight problem with the bugaboo in that it does seem to be THE pram to get but I did like it and anyone I know with one seems v happy.
Intending to try and walk most of the time anyway but will need to do a bit of bussing-hate driving in London athough may have to get used to it I suppose..

you can get maclarens suitable from birth.

agree with bp that bugaboos are a bit too large to be considerate on the bus.

being wilfully obtuse?

ScottishMummy · 14/05/2007 15:52

eh no responding to inconsiderate bugaboo comment

bossykate · 14/05/2007 15:53

alright then.

bugaboos are imo too large to fit on buses w/o excluding other buggies, therefore their users are rather inconsiderate.

does that make more sense to you now?

ScottishThistle · 14/05/2007 15:53

Luck you, perhaps there are many more buggy boarders around the parts I've worked!

I do agree that by far Maclarens are the most suitable for frequent bus users!

NB jem1969, the Maclaren Techno does lie properly flat and is suitable from birth.

Also cheaper

ScottishThistle · 14/05/2007 15:57

To be fair BK, most first time Parents aren't choosing a buggy by how small it is for travelling on a bus...If they are & are asking other's opinions then my advice is don't choose a bugaboo!

bakedpotato · 14/05/2007 15:57

Some maclarens recline frmo birth
My neigbours had a Bugaboo. They used it intially but now the baby is in a maclaren. Mind you they are made of money. And never travel on buses

bossykate · 14/05/2007 15:58

i disagree. every guide i've read to choosing a buggy asks you if you plan to use public transport. if you go to john lewis to buy one as jem has done, they ask you, do you plan to use public transport!

ScottishThistle · 14/05/2007 16:00

I find most of the people who work in John Lewis baby department haven't pushed a buggy for about 20 years tbh & wouldn't be one bit interested in their advice!

bossykate · 14/05/2007 16:03

"If you think you'll need to hop on and off a bus, think hard before investing in anything that can't be folded one-handed and/or can't fit into a decidedly stingy space."

that is from the mumsnet guide to buying a from birth pushchair...

bossykate · 14/05/2007 16:04

so ner ner ner...

am leaving this now before i succumb to any more childish impulses.

look, if you want to go on the bus get a maclaren, no ifs no buts

jem1969 · 14/05/2007 16:05

The JL woman did say she'd seen a lot of bugaboos on the tube! Where I live everyone seems to have a bugaboo anyway so at least they can all annoy each other on the buses!
Think will get one anyway as most friends/shops etc are within walking distance and often go on rough roads etc when visiting parents. I'm sure in the end will be buying a Mclaren for holidays etc...

jem - i was like you in terms of wanting one but being put off by the popularity. But they are fab. I have a frog - which is the medium sized one. i have been on the bus many many times. I usually travel with a friend who has a maclaren and we both fit no prob. In fact one day we had the bugaboo, the maclaren and someone got on with one of those Huge honking prams. no problem.
I have had to fold it up once when i was on there. all i did was lift the seat off with Ds still in it and put him on the seat with me. then folded up chasis.
saying that though I'm in a town. london may be different.

bakedpotato · 14/05/2007 16:07

Sigh. It's madness, I tell you.

bossykate · 14/05/2007 16:07

now did you say tube in the op? hmm? no you didn't. they are fine on tube or overground train imho.
