Bugaboos and London buses

Usual first time parents pram dilemma...Have to say that am drawn to the Bugaboo along with half the population of SW London. The woman in John Lewis said she'd never seen one on the bus but I find that hard to believe? Anyone happily go on the bus with one?(unfolded obviously and not at rush hour. Thanks

I live on the outskirts of SW London and travel frequently by bus in both outer ad innner London and have had to fold up my buggy on many occasions for wheelchairs to access as they quite naturally have priority. My advise would be not to buy a buggy that you cant fold up easily.

bakedpotato · 14/05/2007 16:08

fine on tube if there's a lift...
surely hellish anywhere that doesn't?

jem1969 · 14/05/2007 16:08

Also- I've never seen anyone on any of the buses round me ever fold a buggy (except when they were the good old routemasters..) Bossy Kate- I am a bit scared of you!

I go on london buses with a silver cross 3d which is a similar size to a bug / mamas and papas pramette and have never had a problem I've taken it on the tube too.
We will probably get a maclaren at some point but only because the SC is quite heavy on the escalators/ steps

ScottishThistle · 14/05/2007 16:09

BK, I think you need a drink!

If you want to lose the baby pounds get a bugaboo & walk!...After 6mths sell Bugaboo & buy a Maclaren!

bossykate · 14/05/2007 16:09

i am sorry! am not normally so bossy, honest! i just have a real thing about big buggies on the bus!

bakedpotato · 14/05/2007 16:10

OK, imagine you're tired, the baby needs feeding and it's snowing.
A bus pulls up. Looks at your buggy. Looks at the Maclaren in the bay. Shakes head and says, sorry modom. Drives off.
Welcome to your new life!

ScottishThistle · 14/05/2007 16:14

BK, believe me so do I...I've been getting on public transport in Cities for 15yrs with a pushchair!

ScottishThistle · 14/05/2007 16:15

I've seen many a Mother left standing at the bus stop with a large pushchair!

thequeenofcontradiction · 17/05/2007 13:55

I have a gecko and have found that I can easily wheel on some buses but that the axle is too wide for others. Usually the driver lets me on the back anyway. I only use the bus once a month or so, as I can walk or tube to most places.

I found it much more cumbersome when it was in carrycot mode, but now it's in buggy mode it's easy to get at least one other pushchair on as well. However I wouldn't get a bug if the bus was my main form of transport.

I'm in SW London too and usually get the 65 or the 371 - the 65 (a double decker) is much easier to get on!

ScottishMummy · 17/05/2007 14:05

dont drive bus is my sole transport have cameleon - no probs to date

jem1969 · 17/05/2007 14:30

ScottishMummy · 17/05/2007 14:40

jem - where is my spiritual home where is Bugaboo heartland i want to visit i love my cameleon

jem1969 · 17/05/2007 15:19

I'm only on the fringes -Putney- but travel the bus into Fulham and then King's Road and you will find your spiritual home. You could end up in Peter Jones pram department and not only are the Bugaboos on display but most of the customers are pushing them as well. (even better- go to the cafe). You will be in heaven!

oooooooooo where is my oystercard
i want to do the bugaboo walk of pride

beckmo · 18/05/2007 08:21

Islington, ScottishMummy. Come to Islington.Practically get mown down by them.

I just had a friend to stay with a hoiking great 3 wheeler travel system (her third child and still no Mclaren)-urban detour? She had no trouble getting on and off the buses and it is MUCH MUCH bigger then my (new awaiting use) gecko. Other prams on the bus(also hoiking big travel systems) had space too.

London buses have become loads more buggy friendly and spacious and I think folding up will hardley be an issue...if it is you might just occassionally have to wait for another one. Which you have to do without a buggy sometimes anyway....

Anyway I think you have made up your mind!

ScottishMummy · 18/05/2007 08:27

LOL - i can get the 43straight there and yep i already have said item - i posted in response to Jems thread as i do indeedy travel on the buses with baby and bugaboo no problemo

so to fit in i need lippy on..shades on head (0f course wheewre elese would they go)...nice bugaboo swagger...bit o fake tan....wahey i am islington mum

any where else u want to recommend for bugaboo-walk-of-pride Ha ha LOL

pookey · 23/05/2007 22:07

Bugaboo and bus are ok, getting down the aisle can be tricky. The fact the brakes work are a big advantage over skidding around a bus with my macclaren. I am prepared to get off the bus if necc but have never had to and even had wheelchairs get on the bus at a later stop and have room. TBH there isnt a huge amount of difference in the size of a bugaboo and many of the from birth pushchairs. I generally think 2 pushchairs of most designs are all that is reasonable on a bus and would never get on even with a maclaren if there were already 2 pushchairs on board. 3 macclarens are tricky for other passengers if the bus is full and make communicating with child tricky hence 3 screaming children instead of 2 happy ones.

Bugaboo and tube stairs escalators now thats another story...

beckmo · 24/05/2007 08:52

Tell me that story. I want to be prepared before I attempt Angel's escalators or resign myself to only using tubes with lifts.....

hambuttie · 24/05/2007 09:24

i live in essex and i use the bus all the time - are all the buses in london the buggy friendly ones?? if so shouldnt be a problem - though i do have to get the bus about half an hour before i should just in case the bus already has quota of buggies and i have to wait for the next one

greenday · 24/05/2007 09:36

Scottishmummy - I'm a 134 and 43 bus user. In fact, they run my street. And I'm a bugaboo user too. Oooh, the idea that you may be a neighbour!

Personally, I never use my Bugaboo in the bus. I have a Maclaren Quest that I use for travelling. Like some posters here, I feel the Bugaboo takes up too much space in the bus and would hate to be the one with the offending pushchair when space is tight.

Again, I find the combination of a Bugaboo for everyday walking and Maclaren Quest for commuting works very well for me!
