Black-out lining for curtains ........... H E L P !!

I bought some M&S curtains for DD2's bedroom and they look very nice but I failed to notice that they were unlined until I got them/put them up/had DD2 in our bedroom every morning at 6am since ...

So now DH is saying that we HAVE to line the curtains to make it just a bit darker in her room so that hopefully she'll stay in bed a bit longer but I'm not sure whether I need special black-out material to sew on to the back of the curtains or whether I just need a second layer of dark material or what.

Has anyone done this and, if so, where did they get the lining from as everything I've Googled seems to cost more than I paid for the actual curtains.

you can buy proper black out lining from John Lewis, and is quite expensive, but it blocks everyting out. Is heavy

think you can buy ready made linings too that you velcro to existing curtains
blackout blinds well worth it, we have in the kids rooms

I think I got black out curtains from rosebys they were around £8 per pair and then you just hook them to the tape of the proper curtains IYSWIM. Or get a black out blind from Ikea (cheapest) these are better as you can get them to unroll down the window and block out more light than curtains that are lined. Dark thick fabric like velvet would work well too.

you can get blackout linigns that hook onto the tape at the top of the curtain -sure ARgos used to do them but can't find them

no, velvet wouldn't be same - the blackout material blocks everything out completely - if you held velvet up in front of a window, light will still get thorugh

I think Ikea do them, and they should be cheap.

We've got a few fabric shops around here where they sell it. They tend to be the smaller places out of the city centre. Are there any in your yellow pages?

Thanks everyone. Really appreciate your (impressively quick) responses, particularly the ones with the links. I'll know for next time to check whether the curtains I'm buying are lined as this has bumped the price up no end, but needs must and DH and I are really struggling with the extra-early morning starts at the moment!

Deliberately not going for the blinds, even though we have them in the other two bedrooms, because the window/ceiling positions don't really allow it ... and also because we are really, REALLY bad at putting blinds up and DH said he's never ever putting up another one again as long as he lives

Dunelm Mill do them too (they were less than a tenner I think)- and IMHO blackout linings are far far far superior to ordinarily lined curtain for childrens rooms anyway...you have probably done yourself a favour.
