Is there anyway to stop this happening, weve only had it 6 weeks and ive had to clean it all out and scrub the whie stones clean. Ds keeps playing with it and im worried incase he catches something from it!! Dp says theres nothing we can do, but i know that you wise old Mumsnetters will know of something.

Can someone prove my Dp wrong?

what sort of water feature is it? it sounds like you have algae in it. A good filter plus a algae killer in the water could work but then i dont know if your ds could play in it. best go to a garden centre and ask them what to treat it with.

It has a filter but we dont put it on much so the water gets stagnent i think

Couple of options. Certainly keeping the feature running all the time will help. Make sure it doesn't get direct sunlight. Buy a uv filter (not cheap). Add chlorine to the water (like a swimming pool)...but if you do this make sure that whatever the feature is made out of will not get bleached by the chlorine.

Chlorine option will not work if you have fish in it.

Why don't you just get DP to clean it Charlie?
Problem solved!!!!
