Where do you sit when you breastfeed?

Been told that I NEED a rocking chair, preferably one of those gliding, reclining, padded jobs.

I don't have 350 quid for a chair. Have looked at Ebay but dont' have a car to pick up a chair I get for less. Anyone know anything about the much cheaper versions you can buy online? What else works? Can't I just sit on the couch?

Thanks

I have one which I have sat on ... ooooh .... 3 times?!

Yurtgirl · 13/05/2007 20:44

FWIW I have one of those chairs - which I absolutely love even now 6 years later - but found it awful for bf

Just my experience

funnypeculiar · 13/05/2007 20:49

I LOVED mine - turned into ds' bedtime reading chair so never used it for dd ... and can't say I missed it...
They're lovely, but hardly necessary

twelveyeargap · 13/05/2007 20:49

My mum bought one from mums2b for me. Apparently it's arriving Monday so as yet I can't tell you about the quality. Only £89 though, so don't mind if it doesn't get used an awful lot.

I'm putting it in the nursery as baby will be in it's own room from when DH goes back to work and I'd like to breastfeed in there rather than traipsing downstairs.

Sit on the couch with lots of pillow to put under your elbows. After a few days you'll be a pro, and will be able to feed sitting on anything.

ProfYaffle · 13/05/2007 20:51

I have to say the chair itself is lovely but the only rooms in the house big enough for it aren't the rooms I bf in (iyswim)

I got mine from Argos quite cheap but that was over 3 years ago, not sure if they still do them.

Sofa/dining chair/sitting up in bed.

LittleMouseWithCLogsOn · 13/05/2007 20:53

bollocks
i potty trained one kid wihth another hangin off my boob

melpomene · 13/05/2007 20:53

Of course you can just sit on the couch - or on any other chair, or on the floor. Women have been bfing for millenia, mostly without rocking chairs.

What really helps is a pillow/cushion to put under the baby, especially when they are tiny. Often a footstool also helps. (I use a step made to help children reach the toilet as a footstool!)

MaeWest · 13/05/2007 20:54

I did use our Poang armchair (IKEA) in the early days of feeding, but DS soon got too wriggly and kind of overflowed the arms. As long as you have enough pillows/cushions to make yourself comfy in the beginning anywhere is fine.

PinkTulips · 13/05/2007 20:55

need

bollocks! i'm sure they're lovely if you have the cash but in reality you'll find you feed whereever the hell you are when LO starts screaming, be that standing in the kitchen making tea, sat on the couch watching tv or lying in bed attempting to sleep!

Malaleche · 13/05/2007 20:56

so long as your back is supported and you have some cushions to hand for propping bits up it doesnt matter where you sit. Having said that i suffered terrible back problems due to sitting on the sofa to feed...

shonaspurtle · 13/05/2007 20:56

After a very short while (couple of months really) I found chairs with arms quite difficult to feed in.

I still mainly bf on the sofa with a couple of cushions at my back, although I now manage pretty much anywhere .

Malaleche · 13/05/2007 20:57

by the way, foam filled cushions are hopeless - they have to be more solid and 'shapeable' - feather is good but get some dustmite covers for them.

PinkTulips · 13/05/2007 20:57

pmsl laughing that i seem to have something in common with cod!

had to feed ds twice recently while balancing dd on the toilet at soft play as she absolutely had to go at the exact moment i'd latched him on

Kathyis6incheshigh · 13/05/2007 20:59

I am feeding sitting on the floor at the moment.
Earlier today I fed while getting some scones out of the oven - probably not recommended by health and safety experts.

DontCallMeBaby · 13/05/2007 21:01

Bloody AWFUL the chair I had, and it was an expensive Dutaillier one (fortunately the shop cocked up and sold it to me half-price, and after a couple of years I Ebayed it for slightly more than we paid for it). Chairs with arms and breastfeeding don't mix, where is the baby supposed to go?! It creaked as well.

I usually ended up cross-legged on the sofa, which is a good place to do many things.

BaffledByBabyTights · 13/05/2007 21:04

Sit? SIT?? My duck, LIE in bed, try not be conscious while you are doing it, and if anyone suggests otherwise, dispatch them to get more chocolate for you! . I too have bf while potty training, unpacking a house, stuck on the dutch border (sat on the back seat of the car leaning over DS2's car seat flopping a boob into his mouth - VVV attractive!!!! seriously though, I loved the chair but it was useless for bf after the first 6 weeks - ds1 got tangled in the arms. I do recommend trying to feed in bed lying down - at least you can snooze then.

ruddynorah · 13/05/2007 21:13

lol. no you don't need the chair. might be nice but i say best spend your money on other things. i liked breast feeding sat on the floor with legs crossed!

JUSTAMUM2 · 13/05/2007 21:21

I feel it doesn't matter weather you sit, stand or lay down as long as you a comfortable and your baby is feeding ok. And if all else fails use a bottle and get someone else to do it!! only joking. Find a place that suits you and wop your boob out! My favourate place was McDonalds! How do you feel about breast feeding in public? I once got tutted at by an old lady for breast feeding on a picnic blanket under a tree in my local park!

lucy5 · 13/05/2007 21:27

I sit anywhere and everywhere.

MummyTL · 13/05/2007 21:32

I like to bf whilst sitting on a beanbag or a low footstool.

cathcart · 13/05/2007 21:36

i sit on this wicker chair in front of mn with a cushion on my knee usually. or in bed lying down for some shut eye

hana · 13/05/2007 21:40

whereever I am when she needs to be fed! I wouldn't waste the money on one of those chairs, far better uses for it elsewhere
bed, kitchen table, sofa, floor, etc etc

ArtichokeTagine · 13/05/2007 21:50

Sofa is fine. Get a doughnut shaped feeding pillow from John Lewis. I prefer that to my gliding chair (although I love that for reading to DD).
