My GPS system could find a whore in a brothel - any recommendations please?

My GPS system (in a Honda) sucks. The final straw came today when it told me to drive into the sea. However in the past it has given me such helpful advice as 'do a U turn if it's possible' (on a motorway) and 'destination does not exist' (milton keynes).

It's also fiendishly out of date - it doesn't know about the bypasses built in the last five years or any new roads and the update disk costs £300.

I don't particularly want to replace the car and frankly for £300 I reckon I could get a decent standalone replacement. But which one is good?

Also which particular fate shall I inflict on our present system (I'm thinking screwdriver up the interface myself)

That is because the wholes tend not to have post codes

I have a tomtom. It is excellent

I second a tom tom. Do NOT get a Garmin, which made me drive into a hedge on a winter night.

Whores do so have postcodes, they start XXX apparently

My GPS system does not take postcodes, just street names.

I was mildly amused to reach the pier and be told 'continue for 128 miles' and then realised she had no clue where we were and I was nearly out of fuel

Tom Toms I have heard are good - you can download updates for free can't you?

Have heard good things about tomtom. A friend has one and says that not only is it good, but it's actually made her a more confident driver. This may, or may not, be an issue for you

I'm thinking about getting one so will also > on this thread...

Oooh, that was meant to be

An A to Z map, cheaper by far and far more reliable !

Cheaper to update !

I'm hopping mad - the bloody unit added £2500 to the cost of the car and it's flipping useless. Would rather they have fitted a toaster or similar - at least then I wouldn't have been stranded AND hungry.

CaptainUnderpants

Hard to drive and read though and I can't retain any info in my head for long enough. What I need is for DH not to go to bloody sleep every journey, and help me if I was going down that route and frankly, that's not going to happen.

So the general consensus seems to be towards Tom Toms. Anyone else before I go surfing for one?
