I want to do get some nice frames to do a display wall of pictures of the kids and dp and me.

HAs anyone done this? Which frames did you get? Were all the frames the same or a miture of styles and sizes?

My parents tried one of these and I'm afraid it looked dreadful - I think there needs to be a unifying feature rather than random pics in similar frames. Are all the pics black and white?

(I have my eye on this for this kind of project)

aloha did this and hers lookedgreat

Enid · 01/05/2007 12:06

omg that wallpaper is fab

have ordered a roll for the dds playhouse

puddle · 01/05/2007 12:08

No Mrs Badge they are not all B and W.

Hmmm. I do see the potential for it to look bad.

the pictures are all of children. Is that enough of a unifying theme?

Perhaps I need to go back to Cafe Leon - I didn't look properly.

My parents did it but they were all B&W and I think my ma had them all framed so that the frames were identical black although different sizes (only option 35 years ago). All over their bathroom. Looks great

I need Aloha then!

I've done this successfully with a variety of frames which were all beech wood (or at least the same pale colour!) You do need to lay them out on the floor to plan it properly though and then transfer this to the wall to get the hooks in the right place.

This was in our old house but I couldn't be ar$ed to plan it properly here so I've replaced the frames with the 3-in-one-frame Ribba frames from Ikea, lined up.

MrsBadger · 01/05/2007 12:37

the mounts perhaps?
ie the cardboard border bit between photo and frame.

Aloha · 01/05/2007 12:38

Ha! I did exactly this, as Enid says! Also inspired by Leon. V happy with results. I actually went to Leon to work out why theirs looked so good - they use v plain black and white frames (actually theirs are sort of box frames) but I used Ikea normal ones, but I also chucked in a couple of different ones which I think works. They are similar styles but different sizes. The ones in Leon are framed so the bottom line is level, then you can be quite random. I planned my wall by putting them all on the floor so I could move them around until they looked right, then sketched it roughly and used that as the template, though we did fiddle a bit as it looked different on the wall. I used all sorts of different pictures including ones from my own childhood. Mostly colour, but a bit of black and white.
The M&S website has some nice ideas for displaying photos - here

MrsBadger · 01/05/2007 12:40

aha, it was having the bottoms level that I was missing in my vision - good plan.

Blu · 01/05/2007 12:40

oooh, I was admiring Aloha's photo wall in her kitchen on Saturday and thinking how she had got it just right. It's a fine line between a casual ensemble and a messy hotch-potch!
Composition is key.

scatterbrain · 01/05/2007 12:42

Aha indeed - I tried this but lined the tops up and it looked wrong !!! When I ahve moved I sahll try again ! Thanks for that !

Aloha · 01/05/2007 12:45

email me at [email protected] and I'll send you a picture! Enid and I have the same tablecloth, you know. Swank, swank.

Was v fed up to have missed yuo on Saturday, Blu. Was queuing in dammed fishmongers.

SoupDragon · 01/05/2007 12:46

I think if you arrange them so the outside edges of the whole display are straight and there's an even balance of wall surrounding the frames inside this, it'll be OK.

SoupDragon · 01/05/2007 12:46

You have a tablecloth eh? So you won't get caught out by any Mad Tablecloth Women

Aloha · 01/05/2007 12:47

Well, it's oilcloth actually. Am sad Cath Kidston lady!

SoupDragon · 01/05/2007 12:50
Grin
puddle · 01/05/2007 12:57

Aha Aloha thank you. Bottoms lined up eh?
I will email you for a pic thank you very much.

Thanks to everyone else too - may have to go to Ikea though
