I read a similar thread in the archives and it was really interesting I thought I'd try starting a thread.

I'm a novice mother and mumsnetter. It would be great to have recommendations of brilliant buys as well as a finding out which purchases to avoid.

So far, considering DS is only coming up for 5mo ...

the best gifts/purchases are his tiny love gymini, his chicco bouncy chair and his bath rest I really can't imagine life with out them, the're used everyday.

worst.... cot sheets and blooming or jo jo swaddling blanket

love- baby gym, mama and papas pram

hate-babystyle pram that had so many faults...got my money back.

pickledpear · 24/04/2007 20:25

argos mamas papas high chair it was £70 from 3mths it lies back it was brill as my dc are so alert i pulled it up to highest and they would watch me wash up etc superb

Nikki76 · 24/04/2007 20:25

Loved baby inflatable ring - so handy when they are learning to sit up and my Avent Steam sterilizer!

Hated Bumbo seat - totally pointless!

clutteredup · 24/04/2007 20:28

Love my Bumbo but wouldn't have bought bath seat for DD2 , i just dunk her in the bath between DS and DD1. But don't believe this when you see it advertised on ebay - I'm sure it really is essential!!!!

Botbot · 24/04/2007 20:30

Worst: Swaddling blanket too. DD just hated it. I've tried giving it away and nobody wants it.

Best: Chicco Mama Lullaby music box for cot. Got it as a present and was a bit sceptical but it's now an essential part of the bedtime routine - if the rainforest noises aren't on, she's not going to sleep!

PestoMonster · 24/04/2007 20:32

I loved my V-shaped pillow. Used it to support my bumps when pregnant each time, then used it to breastfeed DDs and now I use it on the sunlounger in the garden

bristols · 24/04/2007 20:34

I think Grobags are great. In the same vein, I bought far too much 'conventional' bed linen.

bran · 24/04/2007 20:38

How can cot sheets be worst? What would your baby sleep on if you didn't have sheets?

One of my best was a changing mat with a harness for when ds was going through an escaping phase, it stopped us ending up with poo smeared everywhere. I bought muslins but never used them, now I've cut them into quarters so that I can use them with my Liz Earle Hot Cloth Wash.

chilledmama · 24/04/2007 20:41

Hated my V-shape pillow but thats probably because I bought a v-shaped pillow (John Lewis) rather tahn a squishy 'up the duff' one

Love my Wilkinet and infacol which got me through a few awful weeks of colic.

Love 'Winkel' toy which is just an amazing toy from the moment they can grip (and somehow appropriate for a little boy)

Leoness · 24/04/2007 22:54

bran - I mean a flat sheet....of course I do have a fitted sheet on mattress, sorry i wasn't clear.

OP posts:
bran · 24/04/2007 23:00

Oh, yes, sorry. Now that I think about it I have two hardly used flat sheets because ds used a sleeping bag. They did come in handy in times of crisis though when we ran out of fitted sheets, when ds was throwing up and needing multiple changes and the time the washing machine broke down, so I wouldn't say they were my worst buy.

Leoness · 24/04/2007 23:01

loving the winkel....... ordered it perfect timing for drooling DS.thx chilled mama

ILoveDolly · 24/04/2007 23:05

best - patterned muslins, which have been used for so many different things and were pretty enough to 'wear' as scarf when public bf. Grobags.
worst - ££ monsoon baby 'shoes' that were cute but utterly pointless and were grown out of in a nanosecond

Leoness · 24/04/2007 23:09
  • patterned muslins are also easier to find in bed with white sheets in the dark (on the night feed)!!
OP posts:
ILoveDolly · 24/04/2007 23:13

yes they are brill!

Leoness · 25/04/2007 09:49
