Winter tyres?

I'd considered getting some winter tyres this year - where we live is a semi rural village. The roads are generally very good, a short drive and you are on the motorway but there are also some pretty twisty country roads. Our estate can also get fairly slippy - some of the road surface is mono block which seems to ice up quickly.

I don't do a lot of driving - short drive to the train station a few days a week sometimes via the nursery drop off.

I recently had my car mot'd an suggested winter tyres to the mechanic who very politely fobbed me if with a "we don't get winters like we used to".

Given the limited proper driving that I do I did wonder if it was worth it or if it's too much faff having to switch and store tyres.

I had gone off the idea but it's freezing again tonight and by 7pm the street was like an ice rink - not looking forward to driving first thing tomorrow!!!

I have 4 season tyres. I just dont have the space to keep extra tyres. Theyre very expensive too. If you slide on black ice it won't really matter what tyres you have on. As soon as the temperature reaches a certain level you should swap them back. Its a pain in the bum to keep changing your tyres.

Be sensible, give yourself extra time and be prepared for any icy patches.

Def worth it!! Better change tyres than sit waiting to be rescued ....

And my tip is buy a bag of cheap cat litter to chuck down on the road if its too slippy to get any grip. Its cheaper than the salt you buy in the supermarket and does the job brilliantly.

I have my tyres changed to winter tyres every year and have them stored by the company that changes them.

If you live rurally then winter tyres are a godsend. I need them, especially where I am.

I love my winter tyres. No help on black ice, as another poster mentioned, but you really notice the difference in the wet. And we get a lot of cold, wet where we live.

I have winter tyres - 2 on the front, I wouldn't be without them.

They're worth it, you'll improve grip and fuel economy. Also, ignore any naysayers - if you get them you will also psychologically feel better! They are not particularly expensive. I get mine through Blackcircles. Just make sure your other tyres are stored properly.
