Are stair gates universal?

DD about to crawl, so need to get stairgates, but we move house in a month. Are all stairgates adaptable to all staircases, or are we gonna have to buy different ones when we move?
Sorry for the stupid question, can you tell i'm a 1st time mum?!

not universal but you should find one that'll do both houses if you look carefully

No they are not universal but some are more adjustable than others - go for one that covers a large range of width

its more often the stairs that are not universal. many stairs do not have walls on either side to attach gates to. For inst- IF I were to fit a stair gate at teh " bootom" of our stairs it would be 3 steps up between the wall and the wooden newel post. I do have one at the top, between a wall and teh wooden newel post, I'm useing a push fit one with the bar below the level of the step so I don't trip over it at top of stairs.
