Espresso makers

Have been through a string of cheap ones of these that don't make great coffee - last one was a Krups about £90 which was so rubbish it was unbelievable. Blew up about 2 days after guarantee wore out and never really worked properly.

DH and I are big coffee drinkers, we have now decided to go for a more expensive one in the hope that it will make better coffee and last longer.

There are so many out there - can anyone advise? Not too keen on nespresso type as I don't like the coffee as much.
TIA

We had the same Krups one as you CD, and it did sterling work for 3 years (making at least 4 cups a day), but it too blew up last week. I went to John Lewis, prepared to pay as much as it cost to get a decent machine, & actually ended up with another Krups. It's the next model up, about £130, & looks much smarter. I think the coffee is noticably better, though dp says he can't tell. They had a couple of Gaggia models I was interested in, but the guy guided me away from them.

I wonder why mine was so awful? It seemed to lose pressure all the time and often would produce wishy washy espresso. On the times it did work the coffee was fine.

Anyone got a Rancilio Silvia?

CD, have a look at this site \linkwww.coffeegeek.com/Coffee Geek{}. My DH is coffee mad. Initially we had a cheap Krups machine and we couldn't get anything drinkable out of it. He then replaced it with a second hand Bezzera (sp?) which was great, he then sold it and replaced it with an Elektra, which cost a fortune. The machine is fantastic and looks great but probably a bit OTT for the home (he has a grinder and roaster too so you could say he is a bit obsessed). Coffee Geek has reviews of different coffee machines so you could check out the Rancilio (it is a name I have heard DH mention) and you could post a thread and ask for more specific advice, although beware there are more than a few anoraks to be found at Coffee Geek. HTH.

CoutessDracula don't know if you've made up your mind yet but I mentioned the Rancillio Silvia to DH and he said that it gets good reviews on Coffee Geek. HTH.
