don't want to buy the brio own one as it comes with the whole kit and caboodle - thought it would be nice to collect track and trains bit by bit

have found \link{http://www.elc.co.uk/toy-40876\this) in elc, and wanted to compare it with a couple of other ones

any ideas?

We have recently made our own one quite successfully. We just bought some MDF, and then stuck a load of track down. We used the cheap Tesco track. The board was a bit wobbly at first, but with the track stuck down, is rock solid. This way DS can play with it on the floor, then we plan to build a frame for it when we move house so he can use it as a table too. We're going to build the frame so he can reverse the table to use for other things too.

The MDF cost about £8, and we bought paint too, so about £10 all in He loves to sit on the floor with it - we've basically done a big figure 8, so he can sit right in the middle.

what about this one? pin toy table

My father built a playtable - it doesn't have sides that stick up but works perfectly well. We haven't stuck on tracks as the kids use it for all sorts of things, and this way there can be a different arrangement each time. The train, tracks etc are kept in a plastic crate when not in use.

the pintoy table looks a lot sturdier than the elc one i think

they just seem very expensive for what they are (but no, dh and i are not at all diy-able, so not going to start making one!)

Have you tried woolworths. I bought ds one for £50 and it had loads of track with it,trains, people, scenery.etc. Its compatible with brio too.
