Mine has just died. I seem to need to buy a new one every 2 years.
I do live in a hard water area, but they get descaled (when I can remember to).

Have always lived in hard water areas but have never had one break because of it.
Get one with a concealed element as they're less prone to scale.

Have you tried a water filtered kettel? We live in a hard water area and it makes the water so much nicer, takes a majority of the limescale. Do you use calgon in your washing machine? It keeps them going for longer too.

They're so cheap these days, I don't even bother descaling! I live in hard water area too, so I have a new one every couple of years or when dh complains of limescale in the bottom of his mug! (bad housewife!

I did see those ones that change colour as the water heats up...Maybe I'll just wait until DH gets home from work wanting a nice cup of tea

Here they only seem to last 2 years at max
But I am home drinking tea all day so it gets heavy use

hmmmm in my 26 year life we have had 5 kettles

we live in a VERY hard water area.

have learnt from otehr peoples mistakes that the expensive kettles break faster than the cheap and cheerful ones!

geekgrrl · 31/03/2007 11:51

ours is 11 years old. never descaled it (but we have v. soft water)
was cheap at the time too

princesscc · 31/03/2007 11:59

NannyL - I agree! I had the same cheap toaster for 14 years! I only changed it because it didn't match the kitchen anymore!

NannyL · 31/03/2007 12:05

we still have the same toaster from 29 years ago when my parenst got married!
