8GB is the memory size, but i am always wary of buying off ebay sellers from Hong Kong. this was an MP4 player (shows video too) not just an MP3 player

my ipod is 4gb and can hold up to 1000 songs, video takes up more space

MP3/4 players use either flash memory or hard disks to store the songs / videos on. The important difference tends to be size versus capacity - i.e. if it has flash memory (for example an ipod nano) it will typically be very small indeed, but it has limited capacity - I think the most is now about 8Gb, which is 2000 songs.
If it has a hard disk, such as a regular ipod, then it will be somewhat larger in size, but have more like 30Gb and for most people that probably means you can get your entire CD collection on it.

If you want just songs an MP3 or MP4 player should be fine - an MP4 player can play both, but video takes up alot more storage.

You were bidding for an ipod nano 8Gb. I think generally people say ipods are good. My DH has a 4Gb one and had to send two of them back before he got one with a battery that would hold its charge and run for more than about 30 minutes. Having finally got one that works properly, he says it's very good.
HTH.
