Daft question about windscreen wiper (one isn't working)

Might not be a straightforward answer but:

If one isn't working does that mean I need to replace the wiper, or could it be a wiper motor thing?

If it's just the wiper I'll go to Halfords, don't want to go to the garage for just that. Though I also don't want to buy a wiper if it is something more (plus I don't really know which to buy, but I'm planning on leaving that to the nice assistant in Halfords ...)

If by not working you mean it isn't moving, then that is almost certainly a garage job. It varies by car, but usually both wipers are driven from the same motor with a system of cranks and gears to split the drive and make sure that they move together. If one has stopped but the other still works, then the connection between the stopped wiper and the motor has broken.

There's an animated diagram at

Ah, ok. Garage it is!! Many days of rain forecast too.

Thanks
