"Posh or Statement " gift for new baby?

Hello. Hope this doesn't sound horribly spoilt... I don't intend it that way.

My friend at work has very kindly asked me (in secret) what I'd like for a gift when I go on maternity leave. The team usually get something from Tiffany or similar with the collection money. She knows that's not really me.

Anyone think of some "posh" gift that the people I work with will be pleased to give, (they'll want it to be some sort of statement item) that isn't as completely useless as a silver cup with the baby's name engraved on it?

I can't really think past "reusable nappies" unfortunately.

I know from doing these collections in the past that they'll spend around £100 to £150.

Maybe a "designer" nappy bag??? I'm clueless. Completley.

Lovely painting/photo for nursery wall?

Or professional photo session of baby? I've got some of these that were taken when dd was 3 months, and they're very special to me.

A poncey designer baby blanket and the balance in john lewis vouchers please.

twelveyeargap · 13/03/2007 12:43

at Fio.

I've been loaned a lovely leather/ sheepskin baby carrier so that's covered and I think I'll be getting some JL vouchers from work anyway - the gift is to have something to "give" me on my last day iyswim.

Poncey baby blanket might be the way to go actually. Seems you can buy cashmere ones... How the other half live eh?

Have you got a pushchair yet? you could ask for a really nice sheepskin liner for it?

Poncey gifts that are useful:

cashmere blanket from Brora
washable sheepskin
SkipHop Pronto / OiOi folding mat / Patemm mat or similar small changing bag that you can sling in a handbag.

Actually have a look on Happybags and pick which one you'd most like to carry as a handbag...

MrsBadger · 13/03/2007 15:44

get the stripey one - so much cooler than more pastels.

hannahsaunt · 13/03/2007 15:55

I always secretly liked the excessively fancy leather and sheepskin baby slings beloved of sleb mums. Can't remember what they are called though.

The Bill Amberg stuff is lovely. I very luckily have a loan of a black Bill Amberg bouncer and also a sling for as long as I need them. Would never be able to fork out that kind of money myself!

MIL is foisting DH's sheepskin from when he was a baby on me I fear, despite the fact it's a startling blue colour. Perhaps I could just put it in when she's coming...

Loving the blankets and the bags. Might compile a "wishlist" for my friend and she can choose something.

Thanks for all the ideas.

Brora cashmere cardigan and trews
Bought for dd by a group of friends and worn a LOT. They washed nicely too.

Kif · 13/03/2007 18:47

sheepskin

actually, my gran was always full of the advantages of silver cutlery for weaning (good for the health apparently)

kickassangel · 13/03/2007 19:07

something really NICE for yourself? like some lovely pyjamas/dressing gown, so you can shlep round the house in them, feed your lo, and just drift off to slepp when you have the chance?

hertsnessex · 13/03/2007 19:09

ScottishMummy · 16/03/2007 09:41

twelveyeargap · 16/03/2007 11:52

Chose these two things.

Timi & Leslie Bag

Rest in vouchers. Am VERY pleased. Have run around after so many people for so long in the office, that they're really sorry I'm going off on leave and are showing their appreciation.

Thanks very much for all the ideas. I'm very excited! My friend ordered them yesterday. Only two weeks til my last day.

Hurrah!
