Diesel Scrappage Scheme

Just been reading about it for my dad as he has a pre 2005 Diesel.
Does the potential £2000 that you'd be given as scrap have to be used towards a brand new car. He does want to change his car anyway but wasn't planning on buying brand new.

I'd be interested to know this too. Have you managed to find out @knorrig?

Not yet everybody - my OH seems to think it has to be brand new otherwise the scheme would be pointless i.e it's all about getting people to get rid of old cars for something least likely to have bad emissions...plus it's the dealer who gives part of the contribution I think.

I do get that but in my fathers case it seems harsh he'd have to get rid of a car that was only worth a couple of grand and then buy a brand new one.

I've had a read and I think my old diesel wouldn't be eligible by about 6 months. Just my luck!

What is going on with this? I just heard someone taking at work about being given money to scrap older diesels but that you'd have to buy an electric car-is that right?! How much do electric cars cost?!

Isn't it more propping up of the motor industry disguised as environmental stuff?
