I am sure afew years a go they did a version of princess style stories where the woman wasnt so helpless etc.
tried to find them fro a present and couldnt see what I meant ( and assistant thought I was barking)

Do you mean Princess Smartypants, in which the Princess doesn't want to get married and manages to scare off all her wimpy suitors? I think there are some others on similar lines as well.

There are loads by Laurence Anholt, like this collection . They're mainly barmy rather than funky, but v. funny!

The Paper Bag Princess is fab. Just borrowed it from the library and dd1 has become so addicted I'll have to buy it.
