Leap Pad - My First Leap Pad - Does it get better????

We got given one of these at Xmas for my now 9 mth old DS (its the first one suitable for babies). I tried it on him for the first time today (we've been bringing out the presents slowly so he was overwhelmed by new stuff) and I wasn't that impressed - DS just grabbed the pages started bashing it (quite normal behaviour for a 9mth old I expect) and making it re-start etc etc. We're really used to reading board books and we love touchy/feely ones - we have an extensive collection of 'Thats not my.....' - (yawn!) - so this might explain why he wanted to touch so much (and mess up the sequence). Both DH make an effort most days to read to him and he gets taken to the library etc. What am I doing wrong if anything with the leap pad??? - do they enjoy it when they are a bit older???? or should I just ebay it??? Feel a bit guilty about selling it as it was a pressie especially if he might like it later on the other hand we've got loads of clutter and could buy him something else with the money - whats everyones experience??????

it will be worth holding on to i would say, my dd had one for her first christmas at 6 months and is only now a year later at 20months getting into it. She loves the Winnie the pooh Book and sings the up down song! very cute! but very repetative!

Also my older DD like to play with it too, especially the piano keys setting

DS1 has a leap pad but I didnt buy him a baby one.. I bought hiim the older style one when he was about 4. He loved it then up until he was about 8. Then DD used it (again she started when she was about 3.5/4)

DS2 (now 22 months) has 'discovered' it in the cupboard and I had to take it off him... too much grabbing and bashing and ripping .

IMO leap pads are not really baby friendly.

9 months is very young. We have one, it entertained DD most when she was about 18 months, and it took even longer before she really "got" it and did much more than exploring all the noises in a pretty random fashion.

We bought a second hand one for our DS at age 2, but even now at age 3, he hasnt got the hang of it, just bashes it, and makes it restart before its had a chance to finish explaining that there are 3 beehives, 5 fish etc

Im still collecting books and cartridges though, as I believe he will 'get into it' one day! here's hoping

xx

i got DD1 the first leap pad (baby one 6-36m) when she was 6 months and i had to put it away as she was going to wreck it! The books aren't exactly baby friendly are they?
However by about 22months she was really really into it and it has got great use. She got the next one up for christmas this year and it is her favourite toy, keeps her entertained for hours.

DD2 is 16 months and now loves the baby leap pad, but she is still quite rough with it and doesn't "do" it properly - i guess she will with time, another few months should make all the difference.

I was given the baby one for Christmas, tried it a few times with my 6.5 month old and got fed up with having to do all the work myself!

The pad isn't sensitive enough to respond to a baby's random touch properly, so she can't really join in. She also tried to rip the paper book. Good to know she may grow into it!

Thanks for all your posts - perhpas I'll keep it for a while longer (I'll keep the box just in case!!) and bring it out again in a few months and see where we get with it.

Keep it Pelvic. Got one for DS for 2nd birthday...he only started interacting with it properly at 3.5 but he adores it now
