Know exactly what you mean YG. Don't know where you would get a tray that big, but what about a sheet of plywood or similar? Could get one cut and gthe edges finished at a hardware store I would think.

what about a big of hardboard rather then a tray??

I've got plastic drawers with wheels from Ikea for under the bed that are larger than 50 x 50 (you buy the wheels seperately so don't have to have wheels). Not sure if they would be too deep.

Alternatively, the boxes do have lids with rims which might work?

I think they are called Slugis (nice name!) or Komplement.
