...wee doesn't rot metal, girls...

tortoise · 28/02/2008 11:25

My loo seats have been on for about 2 years.
They are basic white housing association seats! And i have 2 boys! (And a fat bum!)

WendyWeber · 28/02/2008 11:42

My plain white one from Homebase with plastic fittings (just like the IKEA one really) is still doing OK - I bought it in July apparently so that's 8 months!

The white plastic is stained a bit in places, and it comes loose and slides occasionally, but you just have to flip up the cover over the fixing and tighten the screw again.

I filled all the screw holes on the lid/seat fixings with vaseline, to stop the wee getting in there and rusting those screwheads, and that seems to have worked too. I think it cost more than the IKEA one, but Homebase is generally a shorter trip

do you have a link for it wendy? i really am at wits end with the rate i'm going through these things. there must be a loo seat mountain somewhere.

something is weakening the metal fixings .

Can't find one, sea - I think it must be instore only. When I got it, it was the only one with plastic fixings, so if you go to a Homebase and have a look you should find one, if they still do them.

The long screws that go through the holes in the pan are plastic, that's the most important thing, so however much wee goes on them they're not going to rust! The seat itself is white lacquered MDF, not plastic, though.

I think we need to find out where housing associations buy theirs...

sounds great, i'll have a look, thanks ww.

Ah yes rust is possible...god I am a thicko sometimes!

StripeyKnickersSpottySocks · 28/02/2008 17:47

I have bust Argos ones quickly before. Next ones are fine.

melpomene · 28/02/2008 20:21

Don't buy car booster seats from Argos either. I ordered one online that was described as being Mamas & Papas brand. When I collected it, it looked different to the picture on the website, very cheap and nasty fabric and it was not actually labelled Mamas & Papas although they insisted it was the same one I had ordered. I got a refund.

Lubyloo · 28/02/2008 20:26

DH has solved the loo seat problem. He glued the screws with Loctite two months ago and it hasn't budged!

southeastastra · 03/03/2008 12:43

i've tried super glueing it. just hope me or dp don't forget and get stuck to it.

We get through a toilet seat every few months - I think it's to do with ones arse wiping technique - I kind of lean to one side and lift one arse cheek of the loo - I think this puts too much pressure on one side and make them wobbly. DH on the other hand stnads up to wipe, which is just weird. Metal or plastic, we break them all. I'm off to try the superglue trick.

Jenkeywoo · 03/03/2008 12:50

off

southeastastra · 30/09/2008 20:14

. (ignore me just keeping a tally)

well this one lasted a year which is better than usual but now - broken.

whoopstheregoesmymerkin · 14/01/2010 08:26

we get through them at an alarming rate. Currently have Homebase one with plastic fittings, slow close mechanism. It tips to one side, the slow close lid won't stay up and it cost £30.
We have had 2 in 12 months so it has to stay.

cheekychopsmum · 14/01/2010 21:15

I have the opposite problem....I need tips for how to get the toilet seat off! Ours (there when we moved into the house) doesn't budge. I've tried ot remove it but it is rusted solid and I'm scared of cracking the toilet bowl if I force it. I hate the seat and am stuck with it...

southeastastra · 15/01/2010 08:11

just goes to show that things were meant to last i suppose!

Ours from sainsburys (acrylic with pebbles in/on) lasted about six months too. We had one of thos efake wood ones from tesco and that broke within a year aswell. Both on the hinges. They are bloody crap

southeastastra · 25/04/2010 20:11

another one gone lol this is boring me now

We used to get though em fast too, thanks to living in a flee pit "studio flat" with a shower/toilet room the size of a wardrobe, they just rusted to bits.

I'd never buy a bog seat from a shop where I can't see it first now, it's the only way to get a decent one (hopefully will not have to buy anymore as we live in a 1 bed place with a proper bathroom now).

Ryoko · 26/04/2010 20:49

Actually I should add don't buy furniture from Argos.

We ordered a bedroom set, bed and mattress from Argos in Jan, before we moved in Feb, it said there would be a 20 day wait, they took the cash immediately tho.

We ended up sleeping on an airbed as they kept changing the dates, until we gave up in March , cancelled the order and got a bed set, bed and mattress from Tesco instead (which was delivered within 3 days of ordering).

southeastastra · 26/04/2010 20:51

it's to do with the hinges, have bought them from other places where they look strong but the hinges snap

OP posts:
snorkie · 27/04/2010 10:12

We used to go through loo seats at an alarming rate - the hinges went and they slipped to the side. Tried lots of types, but they all seemed the same. The latest ones though are working really well - they are the slow-close type (from argos as it happens). The hinges aren't metal and are kind of enclosed so easy to clean and work fine and they don't slip. I bought them as the reviews seemed to suggest they wouldn't suffer from the hinge rotting and slipping problems & I have been impressed. They are more expensive - but they last much longer so that's OK with me.

southeastastra · 27/04/2010 14:46

snorkie can you link it for me?
