The perfect summer dress

I can't find one in the shops! Am I not looking in the right places? It has to be long and long-sleeved but very light and floaty, preferably in bright colours, casual rather than smart, and not too expensive. Anyone knows where I could find one?

and can they let me know too

codswallop · 08/06/2004 21:32

think long sleeved is VERY unlikely!¬

mammya · 08/06/2004 21:43

Yes I know, every year I keep looking in hope...

It could be three-quarter sleeves, but the sleeves can't be tight.

COuld you do a short sleeved dress and then have one of those chiffon type shawls ??

mammya · 08/06/2004 21:54

Oh no it's too hot for shawls... and too fiddly and unpractical, I'd probably lose the shawl somewhere. I just want something light, so not too hot, but that is covering because I burn easily.

OP posts:
Crystaltips · 08/06/2004 21:56

SO is your sole purpose of cover-up becuase you burn really easily ? What is the occasion ?

Crystaltips · 08/06/2004 21:58

How about a two-piece ...

That way you can have a floaty skirt and perhaps a kaftan on the top ??

mammya · 08/06/2004 22:06

Well the two-piece is my usual fall-back solution. But I'd really like a dress as I find them more comfortable in a heatwave. I've got one I like but sleeveless. And old.
The burning easily is the main reason for covering up as I am outdoors a lot and want to avoid using too much sunscreen, but not the only one. I'm also quite overweight at the mo and the sight of my upperarms my arms and knees is not something I like to impose on people.

mammya · 08/06/2004 22:07

oops that should read "my upper arms and knees", my arms are OK

codswallop · 08/06/2004 22:16

codswallop · 08/06/2004 22:20

here?

mammya · 08/06/2004 22:32

Thanks Coddy, I like the M&S kaftan type top althought colours not v. exciting. The skirt is OK but don't want silk, a bit too expensive. And I really really want a dress...

Mammya, have you looked in East? They have a few long-sleeved floaty tops, not cheap but not really expensive either. I fancied the pink tie-dyed viscose top - maybe it was £50??? Admittedly I was looking for tops to fit over expanding bump, but they might work for you. Monsoon might be a good bet as well.

foxinsocks · 09/06/2004 10:01

there are some long sleeved dresses in La Redoute sale but the colours are v boring. Here they are anyway...

click on femme then dresses and the long sleeved ones on page 2

Gingerbear · 09/06/2004 10:25

I bought a Ghost dress two years ago from a designer outlet place, it was £59 (full price £200+) Bias cut, lovely pinky beige colour long sleeves and very floaty and flattering.

If you have a designer outlet place close by, look for dresses by Ghost, they are great for covering up bingo arms and other less than perfect bits of bods (like the whole of mine )

If you cant find a long sleeved summer frock, buy a nice sleeveless one and wear a floaty button through kaftan/ or pretty summer cardi over the top?

codswallop · 09/06/2004 11:18

a bit boring but floaty

Branster · 09/06/2004 12:34

not exactly floaty but the only summerish long dress i found, only 3/4 sleeves though here . but i know what you'd like, something really like a fairy dress, like a breeze, light and beautiful. i don't think i've ever seen one with long sleeves though. could you get a dressmaker to make you one you'd like?

Branster · 09/06/2004 12:36

sorry, the link doesn't take you to the exact item, but you'll find it at dresses, item N703 48" Silk Jersey Dress

carla · 09/06/2004 12:36

LOL at bingo arms!

Nome · 10/06/2004 14:01

I quite liked the look of some of these - they seem a bit different!

Thank you thank you! I like the La Redoute one, quite like the colour too actually.
Love the stuff that Swedish designer does! But it looks expensive.
