How much discount did you get off the asking price?

I'm looking for a new (to me) car, but seem to have Champagne taste with a Pepsi budget!

If a used car is advertised in a main dealership for £13,000, to what amount could I realistically get it reduced?

I hate haggling (got so nervous on one occasion in the past, I started going up rather than down so I want to go in well prepared).

Any tips, much appreciated.

We got over 30% off a brand new Citroen C3 Picasso. DH will phone every dealer in the land and play them off against each other.

Depends how you're paying. £500 maybe. Can also depend what margin they have in it and how desperate they are to shift it.

Used cars will not get a 30% discount though - it's new cars you get big discounts on. But then they lose value very fast, so still an expensive choice compares to a 3 yo.

Decide what you can afford. Look around and find cars in your price range. I knocked £110 a month off the price of a new fiesta. It took me an hour and a half but I did it!!

Try car wow. I managed to get quite a bit off without haggling initially then played the quotes off against each other to bring the price down more.

OP you'll get £500-£750 off max. as a used car. Try now as it's the end of the month so if it's a car that's been in stock for a while you'll get the best deal. Carwow is for new cars. You'll get various % off new cars depending on popularity/demand. Most dealerships have up to 10% up front margins (generally 8 though) in new vehicles any more than that being offered is additional manufacturer support as car is on runout /over supply it they are giving you target bonus in anticipation of achieving it. I've been in the industry for years. My best advice is that the best deal for you is the one you are happy with. Good luck!

We just bought a 2014 Volvo from a Volvo dealership. Advertised at £15,000 and we paid £15,000 they wouldn't budge a single penny off the price. We paid cash as well no finance etc.

If it's a new car you want have a look and see if any dealers are selling off their display models. You don't get to pick a colour but you get an almost brand new car with a discount

That's why you didn't get any discount. Take it in finance and pay it off in the first month if you can. You also get added protection that the finance company own the car if anything goes wrong and you get grief from the dealer.

I sell cars (corporate but been in industry a long time) and I would say it depends on what car you are looking at. Some top end bmw have less than £1k dealer profit. If you are looking at £13k I would expect £500 ish would be a good deal! Best deals would be on a pre reg or ex demo. Good luck!
