Between a quote and an estimate?

Have been quoted a price by one and estimated by another! Which one is better?

Written quote is better. An estimate is just that, they could go way over the price you have given, but a quote is usually fixed for a certain period of time, like 3 months.

I think a quote is the price your tradesman will be paid for doing the job he has "quoted" on and an estimate is what is says, its an approximation of the cost of the job but is susceptible to change if required eg. need more materials, or something unexpected happens. Are the two prices very different?
