Help! How do I inspect/test drive a used car?

DP is going away and has left me to collect the used car that we've agreed to buy on a "subject to inspection" basis. It is a long way away so we haven't seen it yet, only photos. I've never been in charge of test driving a car before. What should I do to make sure I don't buy a lemon?

I forgot to say, the car is being bought from a used car dealer - a specialist for the make of car but not a franchise.

Is it an Approved Used dealer? If so they usually have warranties.

No. The car comes with 6 months warranty by a company called AutoTrust but I've no idea if that will really provide much cover.

On the AA/RAC website you can enter the car's reg and they will give you a quote for one of their inspections.

Or call AutoTrust on 0344 573 8002 and ask them what is covered.

Find another local specialist and ask how much they'd charge to inspect it for you
