Spacehopper woes

DD got a spacehopper for Christmas but we can't get it inflated. The stopper which appears to remain in it prevents the valve from the pump connecting fully & you're blowing air out rather than in all the time. anyone else got one & solved the problem or have any ideas. I've emailed the company but think they must be closed for the hols. TIA My very whiny 5 year old's life may be depending on your help [end of tether emoticon]

aren't you meant to pull the stopper completely out then bung it back in when inflated? what does the stopper look like?

It doesn't come right out, it's got a little nobbly bit on the end stopping it from coming completely out. Not like a normal stopper on an inflatable.
