Hi

We are about to buy a single bed for dd who is just about 2 years old.

I've no idea what type of matress is suitable for a toddler. Firm/Soft/Airsprung/Spring????

Anyone have any experiences or links to studies?

I know for adults its really about preference and body weight etc etc but with toddlers???

Yes buy a cheap one, to make it softer use an old duvet as mattress pad. We have bought nice ones in the past but thrown them out because of the little accidents that happen over the years.
