Stair gates - any recommendations?

I want to get a stair gate which is a contentious subject in our house - dh keeps saying his children from his first marriage managed without one, but the consequences of ds falling down the stairs are so horrendous, I don't want to run the risk... So, any recommendations for an effective stair gate or one which is "technical" (ie. gadgety) and so might appeal to dh??

the ones without a bar on the floor, plain wooden ones have worked well for us.

WE had one at top and bottom

kiddy guard - rolls out of the way when not in use. can be opened one handed no bar to trip over. and also the only that my children could not open and thy were mini houdinis!
