I have one of these in my Amazon shopping basket as a christmas preeent to myself... I love my old Ixus 3v but it's getting on a bit now (sob).

Should I refrain from pressing the "checkout" button or throw caution to the wind?

oh, caution to the wind
cameras are worth spending on and Canons are great
(but what use am I, I LOVE cameras, I was please when DD broke mine a few weeks ago as it was an excuse to buy a better one...)

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 09/12/2006 19:55

My previous camera was an APS Ixus though... am I dull?

I want to press "checkout" but, but... er, I don't know really. It seems so frivolous when the old Ixus 3 works fine really.

Throw the caution ... THROW THE CAUTION!

MrsJohnCuSackFullOfPresents · 09/12/2006 20:14

no
is sensible to buy same brand so you can reuse memory cards/accesories

JUST DO IT

RubberDuckWithCranberrySauce · 09/12/2006 20:15

Also you won't have to relearn all the menus etc as they'll be very similar.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 09/12/2006 20:18

Except the old one uses CF cards and the new one SD cards... Can I just hack a CF card to the right size with a small saw?

OP posts:
DoesntChristmasDragOn · 09/12/2006 20:18

(ooooh - SD - SoupDragon - that's sold it!)

OP posts:
RubberDuckWithCranberrySauce · 09/12/2006 20:19

Bollocks to that - anyway memory cards have come drastically down in price since the 3v anyway. So get a super duper large one.

RubberDuckWithCranberrySauce · 09/12/2006 20:19

PMSL

MrsJohnCuSackFullOfPresents · 09/12/2006 20:19

oh well never mind on the cards
but SD is an omen, surely?

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 09/12/2006 20:24

Look out for my next thread "How do I explain to DH why there is a digital camera under the Christmas tree for me"

I even had it gift wrapped to stop me playing with it before Christmas

OP posts:
DoesntChristmasDragOn · 09/12/2006 20:24

(ordered a 2GB card as well)

OP posts:
MrsJohnCuSackFullOfPresents · 09/12/2006 20:26

lovely
very proud of you

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 09/12/2006 20:27

As a little bonus I the gift card said "Dearest SoupDragon, Thanks for everything, all my love forever James xxx" That'll make for an entertaining Christmas day.

RubberDuckWithCranberrySauce · 09/12/2006 20:30

PMSL - brilliant!

Don't suppose you fancy ordering and giftwrapping the Canon 400D for me while you're there? [hopeful look emoticon]

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 09/12/2006 20:34

Of course not. It's not like DH checks the amount of my credit card bill when it's paid, in full, by DD from his account...

Snort! I think he might just spot that one - he's unobservant but not that unobservant.

OP posts:
RubberDuckWithCranberrySauce · 09/12/2006 20:35

Damn. Oh well, worth a try ;)

pooka · 09/12/2006 21:01

I've got a beautiful Ixus in Cranberry which I love love love. It fits into my pocket or in my handbag and it's a joy to use. Fantastic photos too.

hoxtonchick · 09/12/2006 21:02

those pretty coloured ixuses (ixi?!) are lovely, ds & i were drooling over them. i've got a 750 which i love, had the 3 meg one before that....

Millie1 · 12/12/2006 20:40

Hijacking this thread (lucky you DoesntChristmasDragOn and well done for ordering it!) ... but has anyone got the Ixus 850? It's in my Amazon basket and I'm hesitating about checking out - it reads well for shutter lag (or lack thereof) but would love to hear this first hand!

hulababy · 12/12/2006 20:52

Play.com do really reasonably priced SD memory cards. Something like 1Gig for £14.99.

I have a Canon Ixus 60. It's my third Ixus (first one stolen on hokiday; changed to this one this summer). Love it.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 12/12/2006 21:50

I think there are lots of reasonably priced cards everywhere now. Found a fab site for batteries too so I've ordered a spare for the new camera plus a replacement for the ailing one for my 3V so I can give the camera to DS2 for Christmas DS1 already has one.... he can have the small memory card that comes with the new Ixus for his to keep him happy.

the things I go through to give my children good presents...

I don't know abot the Ixus 850. The Digital Camera Company often has good information and reviews though.

OP posts:
DoesntChristmasDragOn · 12/12/2006 21:51

(Just read that back and didn't mean to sound rude, Hula! I meant to just say that the prices seem cheap everywhere compared to what I remember when buying CF cards previously)

OP posts:
Millie1 · 13/12/2006 09:07

Thanks! I've read so many reviews that I'm getting dizzy . Think I'll just go ahead and order it.

DoesntChristmasDragOn · 13/12/2006 10:55

That's more or less what I did. If you're a point-and-shoot photographer I don't think you'd ever be disappointed with an Ixus TBH.
