Ds's great gran has got him a wooden tarin set for crimbo. We bought an elc train shed, a brio tunnel, and then 'proper' thomas trains, windmill and cranky. Also had a table made and painted.

Total cost = far less than elc thomas set, but ds will never know as the trains themselves are the proper ones (bought from the thomas guy off ebay! so cheap too)

lucky ds!

Actually I can't imagine any wooden train track manufacturer being so mean as to make their tracks a fraction bigger or smaller either way. Although, and your ds may be interested to know this, none of the Australian states would agree to use the same gauge until about 50 years ago so every train had to change at the state borders.

my train mad son has wooden track and bridges from tesco, station from elc and the 'proper' charector wooden thomas charector trains.all bought at different stages but which all fit together and which is alot cheaper than buying all brio.
