well, ms, now 4y, is sort of ready to move into the next stage carseat...which ones did do best at the crashtests?
And would it be better to get one with it's own five point harness or one that uses the Carseatbelt?

I think the Hi Liner often does well.

The longer you can use a harness the better. We have a Britax Evolva 123 Ultra which can use a harness up to 18kg (iirc) then becomes a booster seat. We also have a Maxi Cosi Rodi booster seat which often does well in tests as does the Concord Lift and Britax HiLiner.

maxi sosi rodi is the absolute best...

closely followed by britax highliner and britax evolva2-3
