We just used an ordinary adult sized fairly flat pillow when dd moved to a big bed. I think it came with a single bed starter pack thing from Woolies. (duvet and pillow pack).

I've always used hypoallergenic ones from Ikea. We have lots of allergies in family so would never go for feather.

I basically went for the ones me and dp use, but made sure they were quite flat.

I waited until my DD asked for a pillow before using one. She was nearly 4 when she asked and then I used one that was quite flat.

I bought a child size pillow which was a waste of time because one roll over and DS has fallen off it. Stick to a flat, adult size one. The filling is up to you but something that can go in the washing machine and dry quickly is useful.
