DD would like a pink Ninentendo ds for Christmas. when I googled it there seemed to be a number of versions.
Can anyone tell me which is the suitable one for an 9 year old? Also is there a game where you own a virtual dog or something?

Any help apppreciated . Thanks from your friendly Mumsnet Luddite!

We got the Nintendo ds lite for ds and the old version of Nintendo ds which is slightly bigger for dd (she preferred the shape and feel of it compared to the lite) but they both work the same and you can buy nintendogs seperately, there are different dogs on each game so our 2 dc got a dfferent one each. They later bought some Gameboy advance games to play as they also fit in the nintendo device.

I take it you mean the Nintendo DS?

AFAIK, the only different versions are the original size, and the DS lite (which is the same in principle and plays the same games, it is just smaller) I think there are 3 or 4 different colours.

The game you are asking about is called Nintendogs, there are loads of different versions of this, lots of different breeds etc. I think the most popular one is the Labrador one, but don't really know much about any of them.

NatalieJane · 16/11/2006 09:19

Sorry, you did say the DS

Enid · 16/11/2006 09:31

The lite is much much better (lighter and more importantly the screen is brighter and easier to use)

There are no packs around with the Pink ds lite and Nintendogs - the best deal I ahve found is in the GAME shop where you can get the pink ds lite with sims pets. You will have to buy Nintendogs seperately. There are four different nintendogs - but any version will eventually give you access to all the breeds.

If she doesnt mind having a white one than Argos offer a very good deal.

sorry to highjack but what games do you rate for the DS - my son got a DS lite (which I really reccommend - esp. for places with long boring waits!) He likes brain training and star wars - would like more tetris type games than platform ones - whats spiro / sims like?

sorry finbar - should I start my own thread?

We got ours from game last month - was black one and came with free game.

NatalieJane · 16/11/2006 09:38

Dimpled thighs, I don't know how old your DS is, but my DS (4yo) has things like Zoo Keeper, Wak-a-Mole, Bomber Man, he enjoys all of them, and they are a bit more brain stretching than the platform games (he has things like Scooby-Doo and Robots but he isn't that keen really)

Enid · 16/11/2006 09:41

all the Mario games are brilliant
spyro is rubbish
Zoo Tycoon is good
Gamespot

this is a very reliable review site

Have bought my 12 yo dd pink DS Lite and Dalmation Nintendogs.

Managed to ask her in a subtle way (I hope!) which dogs were her favourites so I could get her the one she really liked.

Ordered from Amazon and got it about 5 days later.

DimpledThighs · 16/11/2006 17:28

finbar - I think animal crossing is the game of the moment - the guy who sold me the DS was playing it himself (DS=computer not my son) and really rated it and he isin the shop all day.

Brain training was to make me fel better aboutthe whole compter thing and to use inthe evening to rescue my baby addled brain and he does like it. Mario is good too - not mindless, quite a lot of problem solving bits.

My OH says ebay is good for games.

TheHighwayCod · 16/11/2006 17:41

we haev animal corssing it is good but ds1 has lost it and dh will do his NUT so we needto find it fast.

TheHighwayCod · 16/11/2006 17:42
