Ok, loads of questions, I have no idea about these things, but need some advice before I go and buy something that isn't what he wants!

1, What is the difference between an iPod and a normal MP3 player?
2, If I buy one of these fandangled things, where do I get the music from? Can I somehow upload tracks/albums from my CD collection? Are the digital tracks (or whatever they are called) that you can buy on websites what you use to put on an MP3 player? What do I need to know about downloading songs from the internet?
3, What accessories would be needed?

Can anyone put me in the picture please?

Oh, and one last question, how much memory does it need to have?

  1. an ipod is just apple's mp3 player.
  2. you can convert or 'rip' your cds into MP3 files through our computer. Put the cd in the tray, rip it, plug in your mp3 player and upload. And you would be able to downlaod music if you wanted.
  1. you'd get all the accessories you need when buying your player - some software for your computer, and a cable to plug it into your pc/mac.

Memory - up to you, more memory = greater cost, but you can keep more music on there.

I meant 'your' computer not 'our' computer.

Thank

So is it worth getting an Apple one over say a Sony MP3 then?

What about these dock things? What are they for?

I think the latest Sonys are pretty good, and ipods do have a reputation for not lasting as long as they should, so it might be worth checking out a Sony one.

The dock things for ipods are so you can use it as a stereo for your room and charge it at the same time. Can be pricey and depends if that's what you want it for. You dont need one if you want to just use it as a walkman, and actually you can still plug the mp3 player into your stereo without a dock. So it's not an essential accessory but they look nice. Maybe next Christmas or his birthday?!

I'll have a look at the Sony ones then, thanks for your help
